This 6-day Marangu Route itinerary includes the full climb to Uhuru Peak with continuous ascent and descent, skipping dedicated acclimatization days. While this may be more challenging, it simplifies the itinerary by focusing on the climb itself.

Full Itinerary

Day 1: Moshi to Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

Elevation: 5,380 ft to 8,900 ft | Distance: 8 km (5 miles)
Hiking Time: 4-5 hours | Habitat: Rainforest 

Depart from Moshi and drive to Marangu Gate for registration and starting the trek.Begin your hike through the lush rainforest with dense vegetation and wildlife, including monkeys and birds.The trail gradually ascends, providing an easy start to your climb.Arrive at Mandara Hut, where you’ll stay overnight surrounded by the beauty of the rainforest.

Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

Elevation: 8,900 ft to 12,200 ft | Distance: 12 km (7.5 miles)
Hiking Time: 6-7 hours | Habitat: Heath and Moorland 

Continue the ascent through the heath and moorland zone.The vegetation becomes more sparse as you approach higher altitudes, and the views of the mountain and valleys expand.Reach Horombo Hut, a large alpine meadow camp, where you’ll overnight.

Day 3: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

Elevation: 12,200 ft to 15,400 ft | Distance: 10 km (6.2 miles)
Hiking Time: 5-6 hours | Habitat: Alpine Desert

Trek from Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut, crossing into the alpine desert zone.The terrain becomes rocky, barren, and windswept, with sparse vegetation as you climb higher.Arrive at Kibo Hut to rest and prepare for the summit attempt.

Day 4: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Kibo Hut

Elevation: 15,400 ft to 19,341 ft (Uhuru Peak), then down to 15,400 ft | Distance: 18 km (11.2 miles)
Hiking Time: 12-14 hours Habitat: Arctic to Alpine Desert

Start your summit attempt at midnight, trekking through switchbacks up to Gilman’s Point at 18,630 ft.Continue the final push to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.Celebrate your achievement before beginning the descent back to Kibo Hut for rest.

Day 5: Kibo Hut to Horombo Hut

Elevation: 15,400 ft to 12,200 ft | Distance: 10 km (6.2 miles)
Hiking Time: 5-6 hours | Habitat: Alpine Desert to Heath

After a rest at Kibo Hut, descend to Horombo Hut.The descent offers a chance to appreciate the changing scenery as you move back into the heath zone.Arrive at Horombo Hut for an overnight stay

Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

Elevation: 12,200 ft to 5,380 ft | Distance: 20 km (12.4 miles)
Hiking Time: 5-6 hours | Habitat: Heath to Rainforest

Descend from Horombo Hut back to Marangu Gate.The trail takes you through the rainforest again, offering beautiful views and wildlife encounters.Upon reaching the gate, you’ll receive your summit certificate and complete the trek.
